One Site a Year, an art program of galleryseoul, may not yet be well known, but it features remarkable venues for art exhibitions. This year, galleryseoul selected ¡°Korean Art Association for the Blind – Another Way of Seeing¡± as the venue for the One Site a Year event. This aims to help foster appreciation for artworks crafted by blind people and to widely promote the activities by the Korean Art Association for the Blind. The program is expected to pave
the way for art lovers to better know the blind people¡¯s artworks. This objective is embraced by galleryseoul, which seeks a win-win business model between art markets and areas seemingly detached from them.
Anotehr Way of Seeing
Korean Art Association for the Blind was established in 1997 to encourage participation of diverse cultural activities and to provide opportunities for arts education for the visually impaired. All activities of the association are centered on helping the visually impaired to find themselves through creativity and take advantages of life¡¯s offerings by enjoying culture. Although our organization¡¯s official name is Korean Art Association for the Blind, we
are more frequently called ¡®Another Way of Seeing¡¯. This name expresses a method of seeing for the visually impaired and it also identifies of visual impairment, the arts and the world. Most importantly, this name conveys the message that ¡°visual impairment is not a disability but another possibility¡±.
Art classes are one of the most important activities organized by the association. The classes are held every week at Hanbit School for the Blind and Seoul National School for the Blind and art classes are the most important activities of the organization. Professional teaching artists employ various techniques and diverse mediums and materials to encourage the students to be creative, to develop creative expressive abilities
and to communicate freely. The artworks produced in these classes are also exhibited in special temporary exhibitions titled Another Way of Seeing.
In addition, Prism Prize art Competition which was previously held in 1998 and 1999 was reestablished in 2008. Prism Prize received a very favorable response from both the students and the art instructors.Furthermore, our association began to produce tactile Braille art books in 2003 to provide a better reading environment for visually impaired children. With the aim to encourage creativity and to
present a new way of providing enjoyment of pictures that could be experienced from the tips of the fingers, ten tactile Braille books were produced specifically for children and donated to schools for the blind and select libraries in 2004. ¡®Touching an elephant¡¯, an art program for the blind, has started ¡®Incheon elephant¡¯, a project of Incheon Global Fair & Festival in 2009, Able Fine Art and Incheon Hyehwang School. Taking this project, the art program ¡®Touching an elephant¡¯
has toured schools for the blind in Korea. With it, our organization has attempted to offer a chance of experience and education in art for the blind in the local area and encourage creativity.
Our association also hosts symposiums that focus on dealing with visual impairment, the application arts, and the ways to improve the understanding and reception of visual impairment as well as the ¡®Another Way of Seeing¡¯ art exhibitions. Furthermore, art gallery tours together with the visually impaired are being adapted and expanded in many different museums and art galleries in the educational programs departments. In addition,
new possibilities of the Museum Access program are being explored through the development of the tactile Braille brochure. Likewise, the exchange of information and ideas with the Tom Gallery in Japan and Hana Art Center regarding Able Art has been vital to form a mutual understanding in arts for the disabled.
