One Artist a Year는 galleryseoul이 지난 해 기획했던 Focus Artist 프로그램의 연장이자 발전된 형태의 작가 지원 프로그램이다. 아트마켓뿐만 아니라, 전세계 갤러리, 미술관, 비엔날레 등 다양한 미술현장에서 좋은 평가를 받으며 작품을 선보이고 있는 아티스트를 매해 한 명 선정하여 galleryseoul내에서 전시와 아티스트 토크를 진행한다. 주목할 만한 아티스트의 작품을 소개하고 작품세계를 공유하는 작가지원 활동인 동시에 galleryseoul에서 보여지는 작품의 영역을 확대시키는 프로그램이다.

올해 galleryseoul의 One Artist a Year는 최근 도쿄현대미술관에서 개인전을 성공적으로 치른 코헤이 나와(b. 1975, 일본)가 선정되었다. 그는 세포를 일컫는 ‘Cell’이라는 개념을 바탕으로 조각과 공간을 활용한 작업을 전개해 나가고 있다. 정보사회의 메타포로써 프리즘, 비즈, 실리콘, 거품, 오일과 같이 유동적인 재료를 이용하여, 하이 테크놀로지와 아날로그 사이에서 부유하는 감성과 사고에 대한 모호한 표현을 만들어낸다. 작가가 수집한 오브제들은 특유의 광학적 기법을 통해 새로운 생명력과 아름다움을 자아낸다. 코헤이 나와는 자신의 작업을 순수미술에만 국한 하지 않고 음악, 패션, 디자인, 공공 미술 등 다양한 영역과의 활발한 콜라보레이션을 하는 작가로도 널리 알려져 있다.

With the aim to support artists, “One Artist a Year” is a form of extension and development in galleryseoul’s “Focus Artist” program last year. Under this program, we select each year an acclaimed artist who has displayed works not only in art markets, but also in galleries and art museums around the world every year. We then display the artworks in galleryseoul and present a talk show with the artist. The program introduces noteworthy artists and their works, share their world of works, and thus support them, and expand areas of works displayed in galleryseoul.

For this year’s One Artist a Year, galleryseoul selected Kohei Nawa (born in 1975 in Japan) who has successfully held a solo art exhibit recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. He works on sculptures and spaces based on the concept of cell. He uses flexible materials such as prisms, beads, silicon, foam, and oil as metaphors of information society. He achieves this in creating ambiguities about emotions and thoughts that float between high technologies and analogue. His collected objects are created into new life and beauty through his unique optical techniques. Kohei NAWA does not limit his works to pure arts but also explores diverse areas including music, fashion, design, and the public arts.
